We describe Wisdom as “the capacity to realize what is of deep, lasting value for oneself and others and to articulate sound judgments based on those realizations in specific situations.” It is a human capability combining insight with decision-making and communication skills to meet specific challenges. But underlying that capability are deep, lasting values.
We believe we have seen an evolution in organizational focus over the past 50 years or so in the West. The initial computers provided data storage and processing. We then demanded more in terms of management information systems. In the last few of decades we have looked to the knowledge worker and become concerned about knowledge management. More recently, we have focused on building “learning organization” cultures. Now we believe attention is moving toward the identification, development, preservation, and communication of wisdom within the corporation. We need wisdom to direct the Learning Organization culture and to manage knowledge, information and data within the corporation.
